David Shevlino workshop in full swing this week at Patris Studio
During both workshops, David did a demo to help students see his process for all prima pairnting. He uses big brushes to create energetic brushstrokes and linseed oil to keep the paint thin. |
A somewhat limited palette helps him achieve harmonious color while maintaining a strong value pattern in the painting. |
His block in stages keep the painting loose and open for further development. |
We were fortunate to watch him paint this exquisite still life demo on the last day of the first workshop. |
David Shevlino Workshop at Patris Studio
We are honored and fortunate to have internationally known artist David Shevlino teaching at the studio for 2 workshops. |
We were inspired. intrigued, and interested as we learned more about David's approach to painting the figure alla prima, which is a wet into wet oil painting technique. |
And of course, there's nothing like wrapping up a full day of painting at the Oak Park Brewery right around the corner from the studio. Make Art!!! |

David Shevlino Figure Painting Workshops in California!
David Shevlino
Alla prima figure painting:
This class is about painting the figure
alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct
response to our subjects.
On the first day there will be
demonstration; then the class will
paint from the model. Students will learn to interpret and simplify
the figure by starting with large, overall basic shapes, then moving to smaller
forms. Next comes a simple block in of light and dark tones, then mid
tones.
By learning to simplify form, values and
color, we become better able to paint our subjects with greater clarity and
directness.
This class will be particularly helpful to
students who wish to paint more loosely and to paint their subject with greater
economy.

Bio/statement
David Shevlino studied
at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (certificate ’84) and the
University of Pennsylvania (BFA ’92). His work has been featured in
national publications and he has exhibited his work and taught workshops
throughout the U.S. He has also produced a series of videos and DVDs
about his artwork and painting methods.
“My exposure to art
began as a teenager growing up in NJ near NYC. I began making trips to
art museums in NYC when I was 15 and developed a love of traditional figurative
painting. As a youth I found myself especially drawn to the old masters. Those
early trips to the museum instilled in me a love of craft and a sense of where
painting comes from.”
