Since Oliver has always been deeply inspired by a 20th Century master artist, Nicolai Fechin, Oliver employs his influence in creating sensitive, emotional and dramatic portraits in vine charcoal. To capture the insight and warmth of each subject, then transfer it from life to drawing paper is Oliver’s motivation.  To leave behind an essence of personality on drawing paper, along with intense personal feelings, is Oliver’s attempt to reveal his approach towards art and life.

Bio: Oliver Sin is an alumnus from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA, with a BFA in Illustration. Right after he graduated in 1996, he started his art career as a computer game concept artist in LucasArts. Since 2001 until now, Oliver has returned to his own school to be an art professor for the School of Fine Arts and 2D Animation. Oliver has been so drawn to art even as a little boy, he once recalled that he has started drawing at the age of 3. Somehow, portraiture just seem to be his favorite form of expression which he constantly practice, not only as an art professor, but as a favorite hobby as well.

Since 2011, Oliver has been lucky enough to come across a few distinguished contemporary artists as his mentors, ZhaoMing Wu, Henry Yan and Chung-Wei Chien. Their tireless guidance has urged him to put greater efforts in capturing fleeting human expressions and paying more attention to precise composition in figurative portraits.  Oliver’s first art book, “Drawing the Head for Artists” is scheduled for publication by Rockport publisher on August 6th in summer 2019.

Portrait Painting with the Zorn Palette

     Portrait Painting
    with the Zorn Palette
    with Sarah Sedwick
     (3-day workshop)

    Friday - Sunday September 6-8, 2019

    9:30 am - 4:30 pm

At Patris Studio 3460 2nd Ave. Sacramento, CA 95817

*** Join Oregon artist Sarah Sedwick for this fun and focused three-day workshop, painting the portrait from life. We’ll use the famous Zorn palette - three colors plus white - to create beautiful, naturalistic skin tones.

There are many benefits to using a limited palette, and the technique can be applied to any kind of painting you want to do - landscape, still life - even abstract!

The alla prima painting style, in which a work is begun and finished in one or two sittings, while the paint is still wet, is lots of fun and perfect for exploring the portrait in oils.

A combination of demonstrations, short exercises, and longer-duration paintings will familiarize you with Sarah’s approach to the portrait. Instruction will be in oils, but acrylics are also welcome. Beginning to advanced artists. Ages 15+.
