Time:   10 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Where:  The Patris Studio and Gallery

 3460 2nd Avenue, Sacramento, Ca 95817

Contact: artist_patris@yahoo.com

Workshop Tuition:  $600 (includes model fees)

What:  This workshop is about painting the figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects.

There will be painting demonstrations and lots of class time for students to work from a live figure and portrait model.

The class will work on a different painting/pose each day of the workshop and learn to simplify and interpret the figure/portrait as a series of basic shapes and planes described by light and shadow.

In addition to discussing technical concepts like value, color, paint application and basic proportions of the head and figure, we’ll also talk about some of the psychological aspects of learning to paint, such as giving ourselves permission to experiment and make mistakes so that we can learn and discover ways to become better, more creative artists.

This class will be particularly helpful for those who want to expand from a tight painting style, to a more loose, economical paint application.

2022 Sarah Sedwick Painting Workshop: Loose Realism For All Levels!

Loose Realism For All Levels! Waitlist ONLY

3 day painting workshop

With Sarah Sedwick

March 4-6,  2022

Paint looser and more confidently during this three-day workshop with Oregon artist Sarah Sedwick! Take a step-by-step approach to alla prima oil painting, from black-and-white studies to brilliant color. Build beautiful compositions with life and movement for a new perspective on the still life.

Instead of struggling with overworking your paintings, practice STOPPING SOONER to keep the freshness you crave in your work!

Working with a split-primary palette of six colors and white, you’ll learn Sarah’s favorite painting exercises to warm up for a studio day, get back into the groove after some time away from the easel, or simply shake things up!

Explore how limitations can set you free, creating a painting in 20 brushstrokes, and another in 20 minutes. Learn the fundamentals of good design, and walk step-by-step through Sarah’s alla prima process, creating a still life painting from start to finish! Sarah will demonstrate, and work with each student individually.

Painters of all levels are welcome. Instruction is in oils, and acrylics are welcome - particularly Open acrylics, that stay wet longer. (Ages 15 and above).

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

If you’ve tried your hand at portrait drawing, you already know it can be difficult to get the results you want.  It can seem overwhelming and can leave you wondering where to even begin.
