Capitol Plein Air: Bogle Winery

We began this day of the workshop with a demos and mini-lectures on using color and brushwork to describe form, rather than describing  it from a tonalist approach. It's so very interesting to explore both ends of the painting spectrum.

A beautiful place to learn and practice plein air painting in the Delta
We enjoyed each other's company, laughed alot and worked hard.  Nothing like a good picnic lunch to revive the painting spirit and keep us going for the rest of the day.

Lunch time demo by Elio.

After a full day of painting, we headed over to the Dinky Diner in Clarksburg
where Elio began a sunset demo.
Fact or Fiction: Humphrey the Whale really was seen in the Delta waters--AGAIN.

Elio's demo really was a beautiful, vivid statement of color, brushwork, and creative artistic expression.

Capitol Plein Air Workshop Day 2: Tower Bridge

Our workshop began with a demo and lecture about some aspect of painting and composing.  Today we set up near the Tower Bridge.
Lots of learning and  lots of min-lessons gave us lots to think about.

It was a beautiful day and great outdoor painting weather.  Many of the artists tackled this complicated subject matter with help and support from our fabulous teacher. Not an subject to paint, but a great challenge.

Fact or Fiction: Humphrey the Whale was observed swimming in the Sacramento River.

Elio Camacho 5 Day Plein Air Workshop Day #1

Elio begins his "huge" demo with a quick block in.

A beautiful place to paint and learn down in the Delta today with plenty of shade to keep us cooler during the heat!

Getting started!

Elio finishes his demo as we observe his process.
A gorgeous painting and an inspiring demo of beautiful color, and energetic brushwork,.

A great day and a wonderful plein air workshop in progress.
Elio will be teaching us all this week and then next week he'll join us to  just paint, paint, paint!
That's 10 days of Plein  Air Painting!!!!

qiang-huang, a daily painter: “Demo at Sacramento 2" --- Sold: The second demo does not have much of color. As usual, I showed how to paint a rose.

qiang-huang, a daily painter: "Demo at Sacramento 1" --- Sold: This my third time teaching at Sacramento. I want to thank Patris Miller for organizing this workshop and thank all the artists for attend...

Fabulous 3-day workshop with Qiang Huang

It was a honor and privilege to have master artist Qiang Huang, currently residing in Austin, Texas, come teach a 3-day Still Life Painting Workshop at my studio in Oak Park.  He is amazing teacher, a superb teacher, and a wonderful friend.
He began each day with a demo, explaining each stage of his painting and sharing with us his thoughts and ideas about color, value, edges, intensity, brushwork and so much more.

Using a little technology, we projected his painting demo on a big screen to ensure that everyone had a good view of his painting process.
Qiang is an amazing teacher.  He shared his painting process with us from the beginning block in stage to the final details.
His demo.

A close up of his demo.

Breakfast or lunch--Old Soul just up the block from the studio was our place to go for good coffee and fresh food.  Next time Qiang comes to do a workshop, the Triangle District will encompass many new food venue options here in Oak Park as the redevelopment continues to flourish around the studio.

We had a wonderful time of painting, learning, and hanging out together. I enjoyed meeting new artist friends from all over Northern California and hanging out local artist compatriots who took the workshop.

Another great workshop: Phillipe Gandiol Intro to Plein Air

So--the weather was inclement, but artists still learned how to set up their equipment, organize their palettes, and edit their subject matter for outdoor painting.

When painting en plein air, there's alot to consider.  Phillipe helped each student with  different aspects of painting that are applicable to both indoor and outdoor painting.

A fabulous teacher with a keen eye for individualized instruction, Phillipe shows his student a way to express the idea she is trying to achieve.  It was a wonderful two days of painting, in spite of the rain and even though we never made it outside due to the inclement weather, everyone left the workshop with ideas and approaches they could take with them when they do go outside to work en plein air.
