Fabulous Michael Siegel Portrait and Still Life Workshop

Michael began the workshop with a short demo, explaining each step of his process, thoughts, and ideas that go into creating a portrait study.  He is a fabulous teacher and it's mesmerizing to watch him paint and articulate his thoughts so clearly.

Everyone had the opportunity to learn so much from Michael's wealth of knowledge, skill, and experience.

Victoria and Marilyn did some fabulous work and really applied what they had learned from Michael.  Of course we had a wonderful model who was a real trooper over the long 2 days of posing for us!!

Victoria did a beautiful portrait of the model!

It's such a treat to devote a solid 3 days to painting and learning - with our busy schedules and all.  Juggling painting time with all of the other demands of an artist's schedule is an ever present reality, so this workshop was a wonderful way to immerse our artist selves!

Everyone did some amazing work this weekend.

Peanut, the Art Dog, safely returns to Patris Studio

Peanut, the Studio Art Dog,
went missing June 9.

I thought she had come into the studio with me and realized about an hour later that she was not in her bed..

Thus began my frantic search.

Facebook posts, neighborhood email, Rob Steward, from Rob the Road sharing with his network, Nextdoor.com, Instagram, Oak Park Neighborhood Facebook, Craigslist, Finding Rover app and other lost pet apps, fliers posted in all sorts of places, visits to the animal shelters, searching and searching,  prayers from people all over the world....

Peanut's portrait by Thomas Starnes,
friend and artist extraordinare.
For 10 days straight, morning, noon and night, I searched high and low.

NOTHING. NOT EVEN A CLUE.

So many wonderful people called or emailed or texted with pictures of lost dogs they thought might be Peanut. I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of support and encouragement through this frantic and difficult time.

On June 19, I painted a huge billboard and several huge lawn signs with all the info and a "$300 Reward. "  I placed them in strategic, high-traffic places near my studio until late last night.

That same night a wonderful neighbor came knocking on my studio door and said he thought Peanut was up by Broadway and 35th Street.  I dashed up to the corner, hoping it was Peanut.
I wondered if I'd ever see this 2 pound
molecule of pure cuteness ever again

Cowering in the street was a distraught little chihuahua similar to my baby - terrified, lost...
and not Peanut.

The little dog would not let anyone get close. A neighbor called Animal Services. They only come out for dead or injured animals.

I slowly made friends with the little dog and she let me pick her up.  I took her back to my studio so the poor thing would not get hit by a car.  My heart ached for this lost dog.

Outside the studio door, dog in hand, I kept thinking
"I sure hope someone did this for my little Peanut.
Now I had a stray dog to take home.

Suddenly a car came zooming up and 2 young guys jumped out, thanking me for finding their dog.
Okay, please good Karma come my way!

The morning of June 20,  I got a call from some guy asking if I had a lost dog and was there a reward.  Someone had seen the billboards or fliers or something out there.

A minute later I got a text from a lady with a blurry image of a dog and asking if this was my dog. She said she got Peanut from a Mexican lady and her 2 sons at a Walmart parking lot way up north of Sacramento and gave me her address to come get Peanut and bring the reward. We jumped in the car and drove way up to Del Paso Heights-- several miles north of  Oak Park where Peanut went missing.

The lady gave us Peanut. We gave her the money. And Peanut is back with her family where she belongs.

Lessons I've learned through this ordeal:

  • God can work miracles.
  • Prayer is powerful.
  • There are many good and caring people in the world when you are going through hard times
  •  Keep asking "What else can I do?" and pray for inspired ideas.  Don't give up as long as there are ideas and options to consider.

Breaking News! Michael Siegel Still Life and Portrait Workshop Aug 25 - 27

Late Breaking News....
Announcing Still Life and Portrait Workshop with modern master Michael Siegel.

During the golden age of painting from the 1600s-1900s, painting took on a sculptural approach, where brushstrokes reigned supreme in carving out form and texture. This workshop will focus on a sculptural approach to painting, as well as the “chiaroscuro” approach of the old masters, which used strong light and rich shadow to create intense and dramatic paintings. The instructor will conduct demonstrations to illustrate methods and materials, and the class will cover subject such as:  light vs. shadow, painting as a sculptural language of brushstrokes, designing powerful compositions using lighting, value, color, edges, and paint quality, and finally the use of oil painting mediums and varnishes. All levels are welcome, from beginner to professional.

Fabulous workshop with Craig Nelson!

It was an honor to have highly acclaimed artist, author and teacher come to Patris Studio and teach a Quick Studies Workshop this April 2017.  Artists from near and far flocked to our bustling studio for the opportunity to study and learn from this modern master.

Utilizing live models, still life set ups, and beautiful landscape photos, we painted  and painted and painted.  At the end of the day, we were tired but completely energized!

Here's a quick studies demo by Craig, showing how he interprets the photo with lively brush work and impasto paint.  Just watching him paint is amazing!  We were all inspired to take on the challenges of the painting process after watching Craig's demo.

A very good workshop indeed.  We are hoping he will find time in his busy schedule to come back to Patris Studio again!

Color, light and luscious painterly brushstrokes have long characterized the works of California artist, Leslie Toms. The intense color and sunlight of the west coast, along with the influence of the Society of Six, Bay Area Figurative painters and other contemporary northern California artists, gives her art its singular character.

She has studied with some illustrious painters: Wolf Kahn, Gregory Kondos, Charles Sovek, Harrold Gregor, Joseph Raffael, Ann Toulmin Roth, Jerald Silva, Wayne Thiebaud and others. She counts among her friends some of California’s best painters.

Our 2nd Guest Artist is Marilyn Rose
teaching on March 2 and March 9, 2017

painting by Marilyn Rose

Says Marilyn, "I have been an artist from my earliest recollections, but life took me elsewhere and I lived it to the fullest. In midlife I returned to my art studies and began my never-ending and all-absorbing quest to learn all I could and become the best artist I can be.

In classes, workshops or from books, I studied drawing, values, design, brush and knife technique; color theory and practice, figure, portraits, landscape, still life, graphic arts, photography; anything I could find to aid me in my creative journey.

Some twenty years later, I am still running to catch up, always studying and it is a joyous adventure, whether alone in my studio, in the field with friends, or in the classrooms where I either teach or learn….sometimes both at once."

Marilyn has had the opportunity to study landscape, portrait, figure and still life painting with some of the nation's top artists including Ray Roberts, Gil Dellinger, Ned Mueller, Terry Miura, Craig Nelson, Brian Blood, Brian Mark Taylor, Camille Przewodek, Michael Siegel.

Our 3rd Guest Artist is Kristine Bybee
teaching March 16 and March 23, 2017

painting by Kristine Bybee
I believe that color is similar to the vibrations in music. The color’s sound can radiate across the room and vibrate around a viewer much the way music does for the listener, and like music; this tone can alter and even heal the spirit. Like any art form, painting is about craftsmanship and the study of the more formal aspects of painting as well as the spiritual. This study is always unfolding and changing. I appreciate the study, discipline, and the craft of making art because of this process of unfoldment. However, each time a new question is asked, more questions arise, and the journey goes on, ever farther, ever deeper.

This travel is never taken alone; though sometimes it is lonely sit in a studio without a friend or a teacher. Fortunately, I share these travels with other artists ... And, we all strive, juggle our schedules, and keep traveling to an unseen but satisfying destination together.
